History There are many legends related to Holi. The legend of Prahlad and Hiranyakshyap celebrates the victory of excellent over evil. consistent with this, Hiranyakshyap considered himself a god and wanted everyone to worship him but his son Prahlad refused to try to so and worshipped Lord Vishnu instead. His father then asked Holika, who had a boon to stay unscathed by fire, to require Prahlad on her lap and enter a blazing fire. Fortunately, Prahlad was saved by Lord Vishnu while Holika was punished for her actions. this is often the rationale why ‘Holika Dahan’ is widely known on Holi. Another legend is about Radha and Krishna and the way he enjoyed playing colors with gopis. The colorful pranks played by Krishna on his female followers later came to be celebrated as Holi. Also, some believe that Holi may be a celebration of the death of Pootna who tried to kill Krishna by feeding him poisonous milk. Another legend in south India links Holi with Lord Shiva and Kamadeva, the lord of passion who risked his own life to interrupt Shiva’s meditation.
